Musical Arts

Band

In PreK through grade four, students are introduced to rhythmic and tonal instruments.

Beginning in grades five and six, students can choose to begin instruction on a brass, woodwind, or percussion instrument. The band program provides skills-based performance ensembles from grades seven through 12 which includes two concert bands, a marching band with drum line and color guard, and a traveling jazz band.

With a tradition of excellence, awards, accolades, leadership training, and a spirit of fun, the Whitefield Academy band program serves students through middle and upper school with numerous opportunities for both on and off campus performances, a wide variety of musical community service opportunities, division and state audition experiences, and progressive, challenging learning to insure college readiness and a lifetime engagement in music-making.

Chorus

In both Lower and Middle School, various art disciplines, including chorus, are available for every student. Upper School students are offered expanded programs in all areas of fine arts on an elective basis.

All students in the Lower School have the opportunity to discover and explore their talents through a number of listening, playing, and singing skills. Beginning in grade two, Lower School students have the opportunity to participate in Chorale after school. All students in the Lower School perform in several concerts throughout the school year.

Middle and Upper School students who select chorus as their elective work to develop a unique voice. Students learn sight-reading and music analysis and present several evening concerts throughout the year and perform both on and off-campus. Additionally, beginning in grade six, students have the opportunity to audition for the Middle School Show Choir, Cadence.

Orchestra

The orchestra program at Whitefield Academy offers young musicians the opportunity to excel in musical skill and performance.

Orchestra instruction is offered in Lower School beginning with violin lessons as an after-school program on a group or individual basis. In the Middle School, students have the opportunity to select orchestra as their elective. They study sight-reading, music history, music theory, practice an array of musical styles, and begin to develop compositional skills. The orchestra program provides skills-based performance ensembles from grades seven through 12 which consists of four orchestras including Cornerstone ensemble that performs in the community.

Orchestra students at Whitefield perform in chapel, concerts, and campus events which enrich the life of the community while giving students valuable experience toward further musical study and performance at the college level or beyond.
